Coordinated School Health

Promotes Healthy, Safe, and Drug-Free Schools

Healthy and Wise is a monthly, newspaper style publication with a coordinated school health approach that features an abundance of articles, stories, and activities for elementary students, middle school students, and families.  The colorful, eight-page publications include many instructional support materials and can be used as a coordinated school health curriculum, after-school enrichment, and a family health literacy program.  A separate Middle School Curriculum, published in the traditional Healthy and Wise newspaper format, gives schools another curriculum option or supplement to use with the monthly Healthy and Wise coordinated health program. An online High School Curriculum is also available.

"Health is a Fluid Science.
Stay Current with Healthy and Wise!
"

  • My PyramidLearn about MyPyramid which replaces the old Food Guide Pyramid.  The Food Guide Pyramid is now obsolete and has been replaced by MyPyramid.  Curriculum that doesn't include the Current Dietary Guidelines and the MyPyramid Food Guidance System must be replaced or updated to ensure that students are taught to utilize the current dietary guidelines with available nutrition and physical activity tools.  MyPyramid is integrated into the Healthy and Wise monthly issues and corresponding Healthy and Wise tools and resources help students, school staff, and parents utilize this new food guidance system.

  • The Current Dietary Guidelines For Americans appear regularly in our current and upcoming monthly issues.

  • The new food label that includes trans fat is the standard in the Healthy and Wise program.

  • Current health research, government guidelines, or appropriate FDA warnings are regularly featured.

  • State and local school nutrition policies are reflected and supported in the curriculum.

  • Timely topics requested by school districts are included in the Healthy and Wise curriculum each year.

  • The Monthly (K-8/Family) Issues are delivered during the school year. Schools can subscribe and begin using the curriculum any time during the school year.

"Healthy and Wise Helps Teachers Use
 Developmentally Appropriate Practices."

Healthy and Wise offers an integrated approach that is built on developmentally appropriate practices and principles.  Using a grade span approach, with an emphasis on differentiated instruction, Healthy and Wise allows teachers to deliver instruction that is appropriate for a child's developmental functioning level, which is not necessarily a child's corresponding age or assigned grade level.  A typical 3rd grade classroom today can include students that are functioning at a cognitive, social, or emotional level that is 1-2 years below 3rd grade level, or 1-2 years above 3rd grade level.  Healthy and Wise helps teachers engage all learners and address individual needs and health stages by offering activities in the publication that can be used with children within and across different grade levels.  Additional sequential grade level activities in the instructional guides, give teachers even more resources and activities to use with students.  Healthy and Wise is responsive to individual strengths, interests, and needs, and provides experiences which are meaningful, relevant, and respectful of the social and cultural context in which children live.

Eight Coordinated Health Features of the Program Include:
